I was talking to my kids the other day, discussing resolutions, and such, and I was encouraging them in our goals towards healthier eating. I said that the one thing that everyone in the world wants more of, but can't get, is time. Isn't that true? More time in the day for work, for loved ones, for relaxation... We always want more time but there is only a limited amount, and young or old, rich or poor, we all have the same 24 hours in a day. But, you know what the closest thing to more time is? Good health. Yep, being healthy. Think about it; if you eat a healthy diet, you'll feel better and have more energy. If you feel better and have more energy, then you'll be able to do more of what you want to do each day and improve your chances at living a longer life. See? Good health = more time.
I'm not one to push my beliefs on anyone else. I believe people will find what they need when they come to a place in their life when they need it, but, if you've been wanting to improve your health and need some motivation, maybe thinking about your health as a way to get more time will help.
Here are two really simple ways that I used to get started towards a healthier diet. First, pay attention to what you are eating every day and write it down if you need to. Especially notice the amount of breads, grains, sugar, and processed foods you eat. The smallest step you can take in the right direction is to be conscious of what you are eating, and, what's in the food you are eating - that's the second step. Start reading the labels on your food. You'll be surprised at all the foods that have some sort of sugar and/or wheat in them, often where you least expect it. It's one thing to have sugar in pickle relish, no surprise, but dill pickles? I used to love red licorice for a movie treat until I looked at the label and found wheat was one of the ingredients, really? It's a simple thing to look at labels, to see exactly what you are putting in your body, and a good habit to model for your kids as well.
Thanks for reading this far. I know this was a little different, well, a lot different than the usual content here, but I always want more time to spend with my kids and more time for my hobbies and I bet you do too. That has been my motivation in trying to have a healthier lifestyle and I just wanted to pass along my thoughts at this time of year when many of us reassess and make adjustments for a better, and happier life.
I'd love to hear your thoughts too!
