The lovely Margaret Bloom has a new book out called
Making Peg Dolls & More: Toys That Spin, Fly and Bring Sweet
Dreams, and what a treasure it is! I reviewed her first book, Making
Peg Dolls,a couple of years ago and I'm thrilled to be the first stop
in the blog tour for her latest book.
You know I'm a big fan of peg dolls since I regularly feature
them. I think they make wonderful toys for kids because they
can create them on their own, not just their hair and clothing,
but their personalities and stories as well.
In Making Peg Dolls & More, you'll find tutorials for making peg dolls
but also ways to embellish the whole play experience as well as new
ways of crafting with them that you've never thought of before.
Margaret has such a nice way of introducing each project by
including poems, quotes, tips on customizing and how small
hands can be involved. Each project is graded by beginner,
intermediate, and advanced to let you know what to
expect in the way of construction.
On receiving the book I was immediately smitten by the bird
marionette that holds a single peg doll on her back and decided that's
what I wanted to make. Margaret shares that her inspiration was the
story of Thumbellina and the moment when Thumbellina was escaping
marriage to a mole by flying away on a swallows back; I remember
that so well as it was a favorite of mine too! I found a peg doll my son
made years ago and nested her in the bird's back for a thrilling ride!
Some of my other favorites are the Greenwood Tree Wall Hanging that
includes an owl, a pair of bunnies, a toadstool fairy and a dandelion
fairy hiding in the landscape; the Herbal Comfort Friends that are filled
with dried herbs; the fantastic spool snakes; and the sweet cupcake
toppers that would be so easy to design for your own celebrations.
I know you and your kids will love making and playing with the
projects in Making Peg Dolls & More for many years, and once they
are outgrown they will still be saved for the next generation of kids -
that's how special they are!
